It is well known that resistive oxygen sensors have the disadvantage of having a large temperature dependence. We thought of using an oxide ion conductor as a new temperature compensating material for resistive oxygen sensors, in order to decrease the temperature dependence of the sensor output. We also fabricated oxygen sensors that contained yttrium-doped cerium oxide (Ce0.9Y0.1O2-delta) as a new temperature compensating material (TCM) and a non-doped cerium oxide as an oxygen partial pressure measurement material (OMM). In addition, we investigated the oxygen partial pressure dependence and temperature dependence of the sensor output and the TCM and OMM resistance. The oxygen partial pressure (P-O) dependence of the Ce0.9Y0.1O2-delta resistance was very small in the range of 10(3) to 10(5) Pa, and the temperature dependence of the Ce0.9Y0.1O2-delta resistance was similar to that of the oxygen partial pressure measurement material. It was showed that Ce0.9Y0.1O2-delta could be used as a temperature compensating material, and that, in the temperature range of 1023-1273 K, the output of a resistive oxygen sensor with Ce0.9Y0.1O2-delta as the TCM had only a small dependence on temperature.
