A plate electrode placed on a limb, while making a high-resistive contact, has a considerable capacitative contact with the skin. An electrode is described which contains its own preamplifier and which utilises this capacitance contact to allow the recording of electrocardiograms when applied to unprepared skin. The electrode has been integrated with a commercial electrocardiograph and evaluated during extensive clinical trials. A comparison is made with conventional recording techniques.
