HE EPITHELIUM OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL T tract of man is one of the most dynamic cell populations in the body. It is renewed every 4 to 6 days in the rectum3 and at a still faster rate in the small intestine and duodenum.2 Under normal circumstances, this cell renewal process is in a state of so-called equilibrium, wherein the rate clf new cell formation is equivalent to the rate of cell loss. Recent studies in both man3 and anima11*5 have clearly shown that new cells are formed almost exclusively at the base of the crypts of Lieberkiihn and then migrate along the crypt wall to the surface of the epithelium, where, presumably, they are extruded into the lumen of the bowel. At present, very little is known regarding any alterations in the normal equilibrium that must occur in the course of tumor formation or how the normal sequence of cell formation and migration is modified by neoplastic growth. This report of a patient with familial polyposis of the colon !itudied by means of tissue autoradiography attempts to answer these questions, at least partially. Following its intravenous administration, radioactive (tritiated) thymidine is rapidly incorporated into the nuclei of epithelial cells that are synthesizing deoxyribonucleic acid ( D N A ) ~ preparatory to undergoing mitotic division. This makes possible the identification and localization of these cells within the intestinal epithelium by means of tissue autoradiographs.
