We present the first evidence of free convection development in lake sediments caused by seiche oscillations. Appearance of the pore water convection is manifested by increase in the upward heat flux during periodical seiche‐driven upwelling of cold deep water over the bottom slope. The dimensionless convective heat flux scales favorably with the square root of the Rayleigh Number, suggesting an intermediate character of the convective flow between the Rayleigh‐Benard free convection in fluid and the Horton‐Rogers‐Lapwood convection in porous media. According to the scaling analysis, the seiche‐induced pore water convection could intensify up to 1000 times the dissolved matter exchange between lake sediment and water column. Among lake processes that can be significantly affected by the transient convection in sediments are the nutrients cycle, the water‐sediments exchange of dissolved gases and the benthic microbial activity.
