The effects of the intrinsic activity of nerve cells in the bulb on the conduction of olfactory messages are discussed. The rabbit''s bulb shows 2 potential rhythms, large waves at 50/sec. caused by strong olfactory stimuli and due to synchronous activity of mitral cells, and smaller waves up to 100/sec. due to intrinsic activity of cells not on the direct pathway. This activity is temporarily suppressed by olfactory signals, but returns later and interferes with the transmission of signals. Olfactory adaptation may be due to this, as there is no adaptation in the olfactory organ after repeated inspiration of a smell.
