Bacteria elicit rapid and efficiently orchestrated programmes of adaptation in response to changes in their natural environment. These responses are characterized by dramatic changes in gene expression, physiology and morphology that are paramount for the organism’s survival and, subsequently, replication. Studies of starvation and stress responses in various bacteria have shed light upon key regulatory pathways controlling the expression and/or repression of specific genes that ultimately facilitate adaptation to unfavourable growth conditions for both differentiating and non-differentiating organisms.
