Growth of trans-plantable sarcoma S37 in vivo is not inhibited by administration of colchicine before grafting and subsequently every alternate day after grafting. There is a slight lag in the rate of growth of grafts obtained from an animal treated with colchicine. Growth of established tumours in mice is progressive despite treatment with colchicine. Growth in vitro of S37 obtained from a colchicine treated animal is markedly inhibited. The histological changes in various organs of mice treated by subcut. injection of 1/2 M.L.D. are described. Administration of this quantity leads to arrest of mitosis in metaphase, death and destruction of the cell. This effect is confined to tissues in which rapid cell division is normally in progress; but in mouse sarcoma S37 it is less in degree than in many non-malignant tissues.
