The idea for this book was conceptualized during a research visit to Macquarie University in the summer of 2017. At first, I was interested in collecting exotic examples of model categories and their various properties, almost like a model categorical version of Counterexamples in topology [331]. This soon blossomed into the handbook 1 that you see before you. In particular, Part II of the book realizes this goal, providing a wide range of examples of model categories, with each section telling a story, or exhibiting a certain phenomenon. To make the book self-contained, Part I was then added, which provides details of the theory as well as various constructions referred to within the examples. Finally, Part III consists of an easy-to-navigate table which collects curiosities that can be found throughout Part II. As such, before starting to read this book, I first of all recommend browsing Part III to get a feel of what can be found within. I do not intend—or recommend—that the book is read linearly.None of the technical results presented here are new. Rather, the novelty lies in the presentation. The majority of the work went into searching various corners of the literature to find results, many of which were new to me. Consequently, I discovered a lot of model category results during the process of writing. I hope that people using this book will enjoy experiencing and learning the theory as much as I did. The book has been designed to complement the standard model categorical texts and not to replace them, acting instead as a companion volume. One thing that became apparent to me during the process of writing is how confusing phrases such as
