Molecular Physiology announces the launch of our Editorial Board Fellowship Program (EBFP). Our Journal has a longstanding commitment to providing robust, constructive, unbiased, and fair peer review as part of an unimpeachable editorial process (1). The specific aim of the EBFP is to provide early-career researchers with detailed insight into—and hands-on training with—the many stages of manuscript processing at our Journal, with a focus on how to conduct a thoughtful, balanced, and constructive review of a submitted manuscript and how to reach and communicate a fair, constructive, and data-based decision. These stages include the triage and referral processes, the selection of reviewers, communication with contributing authors and reviewers, the ethical assessment and scientific review of submitted manuscripts, creating useful revisions, the calibration of the critiques and recommendations made in reviewer reports, the decision process, and the handling of postdecision feedback from authors and the Journal production staff. To this end, successful candidates (Fellows) will be matched with one of the Associate Editors of our Journal for the duration of the Fellowship, which will last one year. The broader objective of the EBFP is twofold. At the individual level, Fellows will acquire a detailed understanding of the peer review process, which will provide Fellows with valuable training to provide high-quality and well-calibrated reviews for our Journal (and others), as well as an important perspective when Fellows write and submit their own manuscripts. This will contribute to the career development of Fellows, some of whom may be recruited first as Editorial Board members and possibly later as Associate Editors of our Journal. Additionally, this Fellowship will contribute generally to maintaining a high standard of peer review within the scientific community, which is important given the everchanging challenges to—and mounting criticism of—the various peer review processes established at the plethora of scientific journals in existence today (2, 3). The EBFP will launch in June 2021, with announcements on social media, such as the Twitter account of our Journal (@ AJPLung), and an announcement at our Journal homepage (https://journals. physiology. org/journal/ajplung), using this Editorial as the primary information source. The EBFP is open to postdoctoral fellows, physicians in the fellowship period of medical training, and junior faculty who are not currently serving, and have not previously served, on the Editorial Board or as an Editor in any capacity at any journal.
