The calls of male and female Manx shearwaters studied on Skokholm Island, Pembrokeshire, were different. The results of playback experiments are described and evidence that females recognized the calls of their male mates is presented. Among spontaneously given calls heard from the ground male calls were more common than female calls. The reverse was true in the air. It is suggested that this is related to differences in the roles of the two sexes. No evidence that chicks recognized the call of their parents was obtained.
