A class of qc mappings can be determined by their common boundary values on the whole or part of the boundary of G or by homotopy conditions (on domains of multiple connectivity) or both together. A qc mapping which has smallest maximal dilatation among all mappings of such a class is called, after Teichmliller, an extremal quasiconformal mapping.
