When a laser beam passes through a lossy material, the absorbed energy produces thrmal gradients, which in turn produce gradients of refractive index. There may then occur a variety of effects including focusing or defocusing (thermal lense effects), beam distortion, self-phase modulation, or generation of acoustic waves. This are simple effects, easy to understand in principle, but the surprising aspect is their sensitivity to loss. Important effects, some useful but most undesirable, may occur with low-power beams passing through materials of a high degree of transparency. Because of the variety and importance of these effects, and because Charles Townes made a key suggestion in the early stages of their observations, it seems appropriate for a brief reviewin this Festschrift. An earlier review was given [1], but there have been later developments, especially in spectroscopic applications. The emphasis will be on the effect in liquids, but most of the points apply to gases and solids also.
