SummaryA discussion of the nomenclature and taxonomy of the members of the genusArtocarpus found in Micronesia is presented, principally concerningA. altilis andA. mariannensis; the former is a widespread usually sterile cultivated species; the latter is considered a native forest tree in the Marianas Islands and planted elsewhere in Micronesia. Brief descriptions are presented of a number of variants and intergrades between these species, these variants are interpreted as the results of introgression. Processes are suggested, by means of which introgression involving a sterile parent could take place. Man’s influence both in transporting the parents and progeny over large distances between islands and in shaping the resulting populations, is discussed. Desirability of a much more intensive study, both morphological and experimental, is stressed. The fact that such a study is being undertaken by Dr. Barrau is announced with satisfaction.
