Although accounts of the role played by the triplet state of chlorophyll a (Chl a) in the mechanism of photosynthesis are at present speculative (Parson and Cogdell, 1975), evidence does exist that the triplet chlorophylls are indeed chemically active (Connolly et a/., 1973). In order to achieve a better understanding of the photochemical and photophysical properties of the chlorophylls it is necessary to assign both the excited singlet and triplet states. So far a substantial number of studies have been conducted on the fluorescence properties of the chlorophylls in uitro, but work dealing with the phosphorescence is sparse and the results are ambiguous (Amster, 1969; Fernandez and Becker, 1959; Krasnovskii et al., 1973). This is because the emissions are in the infrared region in which most detectors are not sensitive, the phosphorescence efficiencies are expected to be low, and the intrinsic emissions are often masked by the presence of impurities (Mau, 1976). Recently a Russian group (Krasnovskii et a/., 1973, 1974) have reported
