Floral induction of 4 varieties of milo (Sorghum vulgare, Pers.), which require different lengths of time to flower under 14-hour days, is controlled by red and far-red light. Red light inhibits; far red strongly promotes flowering. However, the amount of phytochrome, and the rate of its conversion in darkness, were similar among the varieties. When far red was given at intervals during 12- and 14-hour dark periods, differences in responses were obtained that were in the same order as the differences in flowering under 14-hour days. Thus, while the critical dark periods were all different, the phytochrome system was basically alike in all. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Author
