Based on velocity measurements of a fully developed turbulent channel flow, the methods of holographic and tomographic particle-image velocimetry (PIV) are compared. The emphasis of this comparison is on the measurement of time-dependent three-dimensional small-scale flow structures, i.e., structures at a characteristic length on the order of the Taylor scale since such flow patterns can be hardly captured by any two-dimensional experimental technique. The findings show that the holographic PIV method is useful to measure flow patterns in larger volumes whereas the tomographic PIV should be used to resolve three-dimensional small-scale structures.
