TI-IE Scleroparei or Loricati may be defined as acanthopterous physoclists with anterior pelvic fins, each of a spine and five or fewer soft rays, and with the second suborbilal typically produced across tile cheek, forming a" stay"" for the prmopercul~ Hn. The group is a natural one, al) d so large and varied that it may be accorded ordinal rank, whilst recognizing that the most generalized family, ihe Scorpmnidm~ is not vcry remote from generalized Percoids, such as tI~ e Serranid~ e.Jimgersen has recently expressed the opinion that both the Tuoracostei (Gastrosteid0e) and Hypostomides (Pegasid~ e) should be added to the Scleroparei. The osteological researches on which this opinion is based have not yet been pubiished~ and it is not my intention in any way to anticipate them; in the case of the Gastrostcidm it has long been recognized that the subolbitals have tile Scorpa~ noid al'rangement, and they have been separated from the Scleropa~-ei mainly because the pelvic bones are not attached to the cleithra; as a result of recent studies of the order t) ercomorphi, I conclude that this character has not the importance which has been attributed to it, and I readily accept tl~ e
