This excellent book deals with the mathematical theory of electromagnetism at an advanced level, which in fact closely approaches that of current research papers. A valuable feature is that the author develops several advanced mathematical techniques and gives examples of their use on worthwhile problems. Among the techniques employed are linear operators, the WKB method, the solution of differential equations by characteristics, and the Wiener-Hopf technique. The integral equations of antenna theory are discussed in detail.In this short review, one can give only an idea of the contents, which cover the ordinary subjects of works on electromagnetic theory plus over 100 pages on cavity resonators and waveguides, nearly 100 pages on refraction in both isotropic and anisotropic media, surface waves, scattering and diffraction and aperiodic phenomena. The book ends with a long chapter that includes electron theory, mhd and plasma dynamics. The solutions are taken as far as the citation of elaborate series, but tabulations are, in general, not included. The book is well illustrated, and references to very large numbers of recent papers are included.
