Sufficient conditions for a matrix of cross-sib genotypic covariances due to assortative mating to be of rank one are obtained. These conditions represent an expansion of a result reported by Eaveset al.[(1984).Behav. Genet.14:371–376]. It is also demonstrated that a necessary condition for the unit rank of this matrix is “proportional similarity” between sexes of the regressions of specific variables on the variable on which mate choice is based.
