This paper deals with squint in children diagnosed in two clinics-the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the Ophthal-mic Clinic of the Health Department, Salford-discusses some demographic and social factors associatedwith squint and particularly withnon-central viewing. It also confirms the observations of Scully and Naylor (1961)-namely, that non-central viewing occurs frequently (in about 220/0 of cases of squint); that it is more prevalent in younger children, parti-cularly in those who have remained untreated for long periods; and that it appears very commonly in children with a high degree of anisometropia. We are now more confident about the estimates of these interrelationships because of the larger sample of cases we are able to present. Non-central viewing is shown to be more common in boys; and the possible associations between squint, season of onset, and recent infection are discussed.
