Studied differences in response time between physical and name matches while investigating hemispheric specialization in 6 male and 6 female right-handed undergraduates. Stimuli which had the same name were responded to more quickly when they were presented in the right visual field, whereas matching was faster when physically identical stimuli were presented in the left visual field. These differences could reflect interhemispheric transfer of information or asymmetry between the hemispheres in their processing capacities for different tasks. The effects of varying expectancies were minimal: visual field differences in response time changed little whether S did or did not know in advance which hemifield would be stimulated. The advantage of the left visual field in processing physical matches was greater when Ss did not know whether a name or physical match would be required.(15 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
