Tub (1704), suggests something quite different from a ‘temperament inclined to venerate authority’ (p. 200). Fortunately Marshall’s sharp readings of Swift’s historical works and commentary are not overdetermined by her conclusions on his early writings. She carefully examines his corpus and a wide range of sources, candidly observes ambivalence and indeterminacy, and nowhere pretends that her word will prove definitive of his political identity – though it does seem likely to carry great weight on his historical sensibility.
