There is at present controversy over a potential decline in male reproductive health [l]. What is clear, however, is that oestrogens, oestrogen mimics and other endocrine disrupting substances, have been demonstrated to cause significant adverse effects on aquatic wildlife [2]. The offending oestrogenic pollutants/toxicants include natural sterols, most significantly 17P-oestradio1, and synthetic oestrogenic mimics (xenoestrogens), for example, phthalates and alkyphenols [3]. It is this diverse range of compounds showing oestrogenic activity that results in oestrogenic substances being found in the environment, in food packaging and in foodstuffs. If male reproductive health is to be protected it is likely that total human exposure to oestrogens will have to be considered. A combination of approaches may then be necessary to reduce total exposure: the prevention of use of some classes of oestrogenic compound; the removal by filtration or bioremediation of offending chemicals, and modification to inactive forms. The technology which could enable reduced oestrogen exposure, ranging from activated-carbon filtration to the genetic engineering of plants, is considered here.
