2. Basic equation. For the plasma parameters of interest-the sheath width, being of the Debye length, is much smaller than the characteristic path lengths between mutual collisions of charged particles and their collisions with neutrals. We consider the simplest situation of the magnetic field perpendicular to the surface bounded the plasma. In such a case only the change of parameters in the direction I towards the surface is of importance in the sheath. The behaviour of the charged species j is described by the following kinetic equation for the distribution function fi (l, v,, L 1: where vI and vL are the velocity components along and perpendicular to the direction I, zi and mi are the charge and mass of particles and E, is the electric field.
