Tests were conducted to determine solutions for future efficiency improvements in routing software, when used in the context of multi‐carrier urban delivery rounds with clean vehicles. The findings tend to show that current problems are hindering IT systems to produce optimized routes that would be better than an experienced driver in terms of distance, time and costs. The key ambition of studies partly or fully centered around vehicle routing problems (VRP) and routing systems in urban logistics is similar: objectives are to increase the routing efficiency, reduce congestion, time and CO2emissions and improve the business models with strategies such as reducing operation costs, total time or total distance driven. Recent developments have shown that it might be possible to improve the overall efficiency of urban deliveries by reducing the distance driven and the time spent per parcel on a given business day.
