In his social satire, ‘Retirement’, William Cowper suggests that the coast was particularly alluring for women who, whatever their circumstances, were somehow united by a communal desire to plunge into the sea. In reality, the experiences of those who travelled to the British coast were, of course, much more complex, and its various faces — resort towns, ports, beaches, cliffs — produced a range of responses, and inspired multiple traditions of representation. This essay considers some of these responses and representations emerging at the turn of the nineteenth century, and makes a detailed consideration of one home tour narrative, Mary Morgan’s Tour to Milford Haven (1795).
