Percentage of respondents from the Health and Retirement Study who were working in 1994 and left employment within two years (1994 through 1996), by depression status in 1994a came disabled, and 11.1 percent left the labor force for other reasons. The only substantial difference we found between men and women was that men tended to consider themselves retired (79.3 percent) and women tended to report they were out of the labor force for other reasons (17.1 percent). Our study suggests that depression takes a higher toll among older women in the workforce. Given the central role of employer-sponsored health insurance in our health care system, leaving employment because of depression may worsen access to care for depressed individuals.♦
