Purpose The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) developed the National Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (the Practice Guideline) to provide information on evidence-based treatment of opioid use disorder. This guideline is intended to assist clinicians in the decision-making process for prescribing pharmacotherapies and psychosocial treatments to patients with opioid use disorder. Specifically, the Practice Guideline:Identifies current practices and outstanding questions regarding the safe and effective use of medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Uses a methodology that integrates evidence-based practices and expert clinical judgment to develop recommendations on best practices in opioid use disorder treatment. Presents best practices in a cohesive document for clinicians’ use to improve the effectiveness of opioid use disorder treatment.
