A study of ten interspecific hybrids involving eight Amaranthus species revealed varying degrees of hybrid inviability, weakness and sterility. Developmental defects included seed with a ruptured testa, possibly resulting from some form of endosperm malfunction, seedling mortality, stunted and deformed plants with tumours stems and roots, leaves exhibiting a virus-like syndrome, deformed flowers and pollen and ovule sterility.
