In a routine track maintenance scheme, the degraded and fouled ballast is usually replaced by fresh ballast, which makes the maintenance operation costly. In order to reduce ballast maintenance cost, the waste ballast may be cleaned and sieved, and re-used in the track. However, the settlement and lateral deformation of recycled ballast under rail traffic loading are generally excessive, which cannot be tolerated considering the safety and stability of track, passenger comfort and the consequences of any train derailment. This paper investigates the stabilisation and performance of recycled ballast bed by inserting geosynthetic reinforcement at the ballast/capping interface. Laboratory model tests were conducted simulating the field load and boundary conditions. Cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on fresh and recycled ballast with and without geosynthetic reinforcement inclusion. These research findings shed further light on the way of cost-effective track sub-structure construction and maintenance.
