The principal theme of this paper is the mathematical representation of empirical results from observations on the physiology of marine phytoplankton, in particular observations on the relationship between photosynthesis and available light. A secondary theme will be the presentation of the state-of-the-art in photosynthesis-light models in so far as they may be applied to extended models of the marine ecosystem.
