The term ‘childhood maltreatment’(CM) refers to acts of commission (abuse) or omission (neglect) by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child (1). Exposure to CM represents among the most pervasive and pernicious stressors in society. It represents a well-established and major health risk with short-and long-term sequelae, including adverse psychological, biological, biophysical, and behavioral states, and increased likelihood of developing mental and physical disorders such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, drug addiction, obesity, cardiovascular, metabolic, and autoimmune disease (2-4). Exposure to CM is rarely observed directly, and therefore its ascertainment poses a significant challenge in the research (as well as clinical) setting. In this context, extensive discussion has culminated in the question of whether so-called ‘prospective’or ‘retrospective’measures are more appropriate to reliably determine presence or absence of CM exposure. The terms ‘prospective’and ‘retrospective’typically refer to the ascertainment time window–whether assessments were performed
