Plastic alteration of the shape and dimensions of a monocrystal is seen macroscopically as the relative displacement of thin layers, which resembles the displacement of cards in a pack. This division into macroscopic layers occurs in tension (Fig. 1) and also in response to compression, bending, torsion, and shear. This type of slip always occurs within the grains in a plastically deformed technical metal, rock, or other polycrystalline material; it is seen in polished sections as characteristic streaks with perhaps several directions (Fig. 2).
