In this article, which is an expanded account of the lecture given by the first author at E1 Escorial in June 1996, we discuss the state of play in the area of pointwise inversion and localisation of spherical Fourier Integrals in R n. The older results are stated without proofs, while we include proofs (rigorous or heuristic) of some of the newer theorems. We wish to thank M. Christ, C. Kenig, G. Marietta, C. Thiele, and A.
