An exponential population of S. cerevisiae cells was fractionated by centrifugal elutriation, using water as the elutriating liquid. Evidence that the population was fractionated according to age in the cell cycle was obtained by examining the fractions for their size distribution, microscopic appearance after Giemsa staining and ability to initiate synchronous growth.
