This article analyzes the language and contents of the major early Tibetan inscriptions. It is shows that several inscriptions generally believed to date to the Tibetan Empire period contain linguistic usages and religious conceptions typical of later periods of Tibetan history. It is argued that removing the non-Imperial inscriptions from the corpus allows us to understand more clearly the genuine inscriptions' functions.
