The way in which the temperature of a thermal-conductivity probe (a heated cylinder in an infinite medium) approaches its logarithmic asymptote is discussed. Previous results of Buettner are criticized, in particular his conclusion that it is impossible to measure diffusivity by the use of cylindrical probes. An improved method of determining linear asymptotes for this purpose is described.
