Wetting processes play major roles in many fields including painting, printing, surface coating but also in agriculture, oil recovery etc...“Wetting” covers all phenomena occurring when a liquid is put in contact with a solid, or an immiscible liquid. Here, we shall restrict ourselves to the dynamic wetting of solid surfaces, ie, the situation when a liquid edge moves on a solid substrate. The thickness profile of the liquid front close to the solid depends on the scale of observation and on the velocity. At the macroscopic scale, ie, for thicknesses above a micrometer, the profile looks wedge-shaped: The liquid meets the solid at a certain anglecalled the contact angle, which is the relevant parameter at this scale.
