Infra-red spectra of wood sections of E. regnans and P. radiata have been recorded and the bands assigned to the appropriate wood constituents. Some understanding of the relative orientations of the wood constituents has been obtained from polarized spectra. Differences in the spectra of the two species have been related to known differences in their chemical composition. The effect on the spectra of treating the wood with certain reagents is also described. From authors' summary.
