The common practice of having between 8 and 20 mm of plant samples excluded from pressure chambers during determinations of xylem sap pressure potential can produce ‘exclusion’ errors as large as −1300 kg−1. These may be minimized by simple improvements in methodology which also facilitate operation and permit determinations with samples of different size, shape, and rigidity.
