The purpose of this research is to demonstrate a new design for a mass sensor with a microbeam resonator that is free from power supply lines. The line-free mass sensor comprises a microbeam resonator and a separate piezoelectric element used to excite vibrations in the resonator. Electrical power is used to actuate the piezoelectric element, leaving the microbeam resonator free from power lines. Target molecules become attached to the microbeam resonator changing its resonant frequency. The geometrical shape and dimensions of the microbeam resonator were designed using an eigenvalue-eigenvector evaluation employing a finite element method. The size of the microbeam resonator is 4 × 0.4 × 0.4 mm3 and it was fabricated from an AT-Cut crystal in a free-free bar type configuration. The microbeam resonator was operated in the primary mode of vibration. The concentration of total protein in human saliva samples was measured using the line-free mass sensor. If an optical displacement sensor with a frequency resolution of 1 mHz is used, it is estimated that a sensitivity of 76.2 ng/ml can be achieved with the line-free mass sensor.
