In order to make transgenic rice tolerant to Fe-deficiency on calcareous soils, we cloned several genes from barley roots that contribute to the biosynthesis of the mugineic acid family phytosiderophores (MAs) from the precursor methionine. Of these, adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (aprt), nicotianamine synthase (nas), nicotianamine aminotransferase (naat), and a putative mugineic acid synthase (Ids3) were induced specifically in the roots of Fe-deficient plants. The hypothetical ‘FeIII-MA transporter’ gene has not yet been cloned successfully. We are now introducing nas and naat genes into rice plants.
