Four agents were recovered from patients ill with respiratory disease diagnosed as "pharyngitis" or "common cold". These agents were found to be strains of a single virus which has been designated as the Coe virus. On the bases of the immunologic studies described in this paper, the Coe virus is believed to be a newly recognized agent. No evidence has been uncovered to relate the Coe virus to herpes simplex virus, to the adenovirus group, to members of the Coxsackie A (types 1 through 19) or group B (types 1 through 5) viruses, or to the ECHO virus family (types 1 through 19). Other properties of the Coe virus indicate that it is not related to the myxoviruses, including the croup-associated agent, nor to the respiratory syncytial viruses, the hemadsorptive viruses, the 2060 virus nor the JH virus.
