RAPID progress in imaging techniques and advances in computer technology during the past decade have had an unquestionably profound effect on radiology, as well as a strong influence on related clinical fields. The role of imaging in establishing a diagnosis and in guiding therapy is widely accepted, and interventional radiology has been boosted by technologic advances. Although imagebased information has always influenced the therapeutic process, image-guided therapy has been revitalized by the improved quality and content of digital data and by the ease with which computers can manipulate the images. Although interventional radiology can play a considerable role in the further development of image-guided therapy, surgery has been an important ally in developing and using intraoperative imaging. The most compelling reason to adopt intraoperative image guidance is to reduce surgical morbidity. To achieve that goal, surgeons have had to assess their overall performance and in the process have discovered the weak-
