The inadequacy of existing theoretical and methodological approaches to historical space has resulted in the widespread misrepresentation of the phase of British urbanisation associated with the industrial revolution. This paper takes as a case study the English industrial city of Sheffield, during a period of rapid growth 1770-1850; it utilises space syntax techniques and deploys time-series data to develop the perspective of ‘spatial history’. An extensive dataset recording the location of Sheffield’s metal trades between 1770-1840, extracted from commercial directories, provides the empirical basis for a time-series of six ‘scalograms’ (matricies) which are analysed statistically to elucidate the relation between industrial activity and urban form. The analysis identfies the emergence of temporal-morphological patterns in the development of early industrial Sheffield commensurate with the expansion in industrial activities of the ‘little mesters’, the craftsmen of the town’s workshop-based cutlery industry.
