Inpatient suicide has been listed as a common severe incident in hospitals in the USA since the 1990s.[1] In Japan, the Patient Safety Promotion (PSP) Committee of the Japan Council for Quality Health Care (JCQHC) first conducted a survey to reveal the situation regarding inpatient suicides in Japan in 2005.[2] Thirty percent (170/575) of the participating hospitals reported a total of 347 inpatient suicides within the previous 3 years.
