This paper critically reviews the existing literature on multiple-trip journeys, and clarifies the need for an improved conceptualization and modeling strategy. It also suggests different ways that trip chaining can be treated and a theory constructed. Exploratory studies, fiom the 1960s and 1970s, are briefly surveyed (Section I). While they developed the existence and complexity of travel patterns, they lacked any comprehensive theoretical fiamework. However, they were usel Rushton 1971) to more complex studies by planners and spatial theoreticians. Despite several recent efforts at synthesizing and understanding travel behavior (Hensher 1976; Jones 1978; Hanson 1979, 1980b; Burnett 1980a; Burnett and Hanson 1982; Bacon 1984; Horowitz 1985; Timmermans and Borgers 1985), many investigations in the transportation field are still working in a partial way and ignore travelchaining behavior. This paper provides a critical review of the existing literature about multiple-trip journeys, and aims specifically at clarifymg the need for an improved conceptualization and modeling strategy. It also suggests different ways in which trip chaining could be treated and a theory constructed.
