This paper deals with an analysis of certain objective characteristics of sequences of verbal associative responses occurring in situations where the instructions define the relevance of the responses, and where there is a limit to the number of relevant responses that can be given. Simple illustrations of this type of associative thinking are found in the responses which a subject gives when asked to name as many cities in the US as he can, or when instructed to list pleasant activities. At first the responses occur with relative ease and rapidity; after a time they occur slowly and the subject gives evidence of effort in summoning them. The data reported here are consistent with the hypothesis that the rate of occurrence of associative responses in this type of situation varies directly with the difference between the num-. ber of responses given and the total number of available responses, ie, with the number of remaining available responses. This functional relationship is derived from the following modified exponential equation:
