Direct calorimeters for use on animals or humans are generally difficult to operate and respond very slowly. The gradient calorimeter described here has a time lag of only 42 sec. and was specifically designed for studies of reflex mechanisms involved in temp. control. The subject is completely surrounded by a layer of thermally conducting matter, the outside surface of which is held at a constant (reference) temp. Heat transferred in any manner by the subject to the inner surface of the thermally conducting layer will be transferred across the layer in accordance with conventional heat laws. The temp. gradient across the thermally conducting layer is used to calculate the heat lost by the subject.
