This book is intended to present the results of research on existing school-to-work systems in the United States. It is a comprehensive review of research on school-to-work programs, and brings those research findings to bear on the strategic choices that confront states and localities in their search for career-related programs in secondary schools and two-year colleges. School-to-work programs are classified here in two ways: school-and-work and school-for-work. It is noted that one major new initiative is the integration of academic and vocational curricula. A summary is presented of five integrated programs and their effects on students to date. There is also a summary of selected studies of programs for young people who are not attending school. It is suggested that research into school-to-work programs is still limited in several respects and new evaluation systems need to be developed.
